I loved The Evil Within so much I committed to making a video walk-through on how to beat it on Akumu, the hardest difficulty mode, with no locker keys for extra ammo and health, and no upgrades. Sadly they dumbed down The Evil Within 2 with a cover system, an ability to do auto takedowns from cover, and enemies that can't hear where you run to and stop searching and turn around a few seconds after you run out of their sight. Not many games period, let alone horror games, have AI that sophisticated anymore.

They are also tricky to sneak up on for silent kills, and they can hear the last spot you sprinted to, so they're hard to evade and hide from. It's also hard to predict whether prone enemies will strike at you after knocking them down. Each time you increase the difficulty level, the monsters get more aware and faster, and there are more traps that are harder to disarm. The Evil Within is one of my all time favorite Horror games, and it has tons of replay value. It's merely a matter of being observant and avoiding them based on that. When monster AI are not alerted, they always follow scripted behaviors and pathways. Therein lies the main problem with these type games. The problem was you didn't really have to use distraction items if you just stayed crouched and hidden. At least it had items you could use to distract, and a monster that adapted to your methods, and they mixed it up with robots that could be killed. I'm quite frankly not scared by any types of horror games, but at least in the combat type ones there's the stress of not knowing if I'll be overwhelmed, or successfully dominate.Īlien Isolation is the only game that fairly closely follows the non combat type horror genre that I liked. I find once you learn how to evade the monster these type games are generally too easy, predictable, and lacking in replay value. I've tried Outlast 1, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Alien Isolation, and SOMA. I don't generally like the non combat horror type games.
